What I do

Four principles. The same four, for every family.

  1. First, make sure the money and property you already have cannot be lost, whether to a bad decision, a bad year, or a problem nobody saw coming.

Places I love

Work took me to Africa. Everything else kept me going back.

Most of the families I work with are African, and over twenty years the continent stopped being where I travelled for work and became somewhere I belong. These are the places I return to.

Smooth granite boulders on the white sand at Anse Source d'Argent, La Digue, Seychelles
SeychellesWhere I go to do absolutely nothing. A week here and I am myself again.
An acacia tree silhouetted against an orange sunset in the Maasai Mara, Kenya
KenyaMy second home. Many of the families I work with are here, and so are many of my friends.
Aerial view of a beach and turquoise lagoon in Mauritius, with a mountain behind
MauritiusWarm water, slow mornings, and long breakfasts.
A dhow sailing boat in silhouette at sunset off Zanzibar, Tanzania
TanzaniaZanzibar sunsets that look edited, and are not.
The Avenue of the Baobabs at sunrise near Morondava, Madagascar
MadagascarBaobab trees the size of buildings, on the quietest roads I know.
Victoria Falls at sunrise, mist rising above green trees, Zimbabwe
ZimbabweVictoria Falls at sunrise. Big skies, and bigger hearts.
Thiksey Monastery on its hill in Ladakh, with the Himalayas behind
The HimalayasThe opposite of a beach, and just as good for me. Ladakh is where I go to think.

These are the places I go back to.

Life outside work

The rest of the week is not about money.

Asset allocation is what I do, not all of who I am. These are the things that fill the hours around it.

Two people dancing, in silhouette against warm red light
DancingAny music, any floor. I am not good at it and I do not care.
A trumpet player on a small stage at night
Live musicSmall rooms, real instruments. I will travel for a good gig.
Friends sharing a meal around a long table
A table of friendsLong dinners that start at eight and end when they end.
A crisp dosa with potato masala, sambar and chutneys
Dosa and filter coffeeThe South Mumbai breakfast I have never found a match for in Dubai.
Morning sunlight through mist on a quiet forest path
A quiet morning walkBefore the phone starts. The only hour of the day nobody wants anything.
A house with big windows on the edge of still water, mountains behind
SomedayOne day, a house in Africa. Big windows, water in view. Not a plan yet, just the picture I keep coming back to.

Journal

Short notes, on the things families ask me about.

Never advice, and never about anyone in particular. Notes from twenty years of the same conversations.

Why I go to Ladakh to think

The beach is where I stop thinking. The mountains are where I take the one question I have been avoiding.
